How weekly options expiration works

Every listed option has a fixed expiration date. Many US stock options stop trading at 4:00 pm Eastern, but that is not necessarily your broker’s deadline for exercise instructions. An in-the-money option may be exercised unless contrary instructions apply, while an out-of-the-money option can expire worthless. The Options Industry Council explains exercise procedures.

Common questions

When do weekly options expire?

For Friday-expiring US stock options, weekly series normally expire on Fridays other than the standard third-Friday monthly expiration. Holiday adjustments apply. Some index and ETF products also have weekday expirations; check the product's specifications and option chain.

What is the difference between weekly and monthly options expiration?

Monthly options expire on the third Friday of each month. Weekly options expire on the other Fridays, typically three or four each month, which gives traders shorter, more frequent windows to trade a specific catalyst.

Do all stocks have weekly options?

No. Weekly options are listed on the most actively traded stocks, ETFs and indexes. You can see the stocks we research, and their track records, on our weekly options by stock pages.

When do US weekly options expire if you are outside the United States?

Many US weekly options on stocks and ETFs expire on Friday, or the preceding trading day when Friday is a US market holiday. Most stop trading at 4:00 pm Eastern time (ET), although some trade later. This is generally Friday evening in Europe and the UK, and the following calendar day in much of Asia and Australia. Check the trading hours for your contract and your broker's cut-off times.

What time do weekly options expire?

Many US stock options stop trading at 4:00 pm Eastern on expiration day. Trading hours, exercise deadlines and settlement are different things, and some products have different schedules. Check the contract specifications and your broker's cutoff.
